About Blue Lakes Breckenridge

Blue Lakes is a beautiful alpine lake that has 360-degree mountain views. It’s located on the outskirts of Breckenridge, off Highway 9 on Hoosier Pass. While the trail to get to Blue Lakes is quite easy, you will start on the same trail that takes you up one of iconic Colorado’s 14ers, Quandary Peak.

Since this is an easily accessible area to the popular mountain town of Breckenridge, it can be very busy (especially on weekends). I highly recommend going on a weekday at sunrise to avoid the crowds. While this may not sound like something you want to do, read my list below about the pros/cons of a sunrise engagement session before making your decision!

Pros/Cons of a Sunrise Engagement Session

If you are hoping to have your engagement session at the Blue Lakes in Breckenridge, then I HIGHLY recommend you do so at sunrise. I know that not everyone is a “morning person” and would probably prefer not to wake up at the crack of dawn to take photos. But I promise being there for sunrise is worth it!

In case you’re still deciding on what you want to do, I wanted to share some of my pros/cons as a photographer that I share with all my couples when it comes to a sunrise session.

Pros

  • Fewer people/crowds – it’s no surprise that beautiful spots in the mountains become popular. The earlier you get there, the fewer people there will be in the backdrop of your photos! Not only that, but it’s a much more peaceful experience having a more private morning in the mountains.
  • Ideal lighting – the soft light just before sunrise (also known as the Alpenglow) is a beautiful time to take photos. The colors of sunrise can be the perfect addition to your already stunning mountain backdrop!

Cons

  • Waking up early – depending on how far you are from the location and the season of the year, you could be waking up at 3:00 am to be on location at sunrise. Sunrise in the summer tends to be quite early!
  • Length of Time – usually, you’ll need to be quick to get all of those dreamy photos in the soft light (which is a team effort between the couple and the photographer). Once the sun comes up fully, the direct sunlight can be quite harsh in photos. For example, at sunset, you usually get the ideal soft light for a longer period of time (usually until it gets dark). But harsh light doesn’t necessarily mean bad photos if you hire the right photographer! Personally, I love a good direct-light photo.

After chatting about these pros/cons with my couple, they decided a sunrise engagement session at Blue Lakes in Breckenridge was so worth it! We all LOVED how they turned out – check them out for yourself below!
